"I love to walk. I can walk on the track when it's cold, rainy, or super hot." Resident Terry Propper said that to the Ocean City Sentinel at the Community Center's opening last spring. Another resident, Keith Conway, added, "The track will be good in wintertime."
That winter is close now. The building at 4500 Central Avenue opened on March 28, 2026, so this is its first off-season. The fee page says general use is free for Sea Isle City property owners, and it defines a property owner as someone who owns a main home or a second home used part of the year or rented to others. Spouses and children under 18 are included. If you own a place here and come down on weekends, the city treats you the same as someone who lives here twelve months a year. The October schedule mostly runs Monday through Thursday, though. Here is what a weekend owner can actually use.
A Public Parcel Since 1882
The block between 45th and 46th Streets, from Central Avenue to Park Road, has been public land since Sea Isle was founded in 1882. It started as an open sand lot where children played baseball. A "Red Brick" school went up on the Central Avenue side in 1914, and the Park Road School replaced it in the early '70s. The school closed in 2012. After Superstorm Sandy it housed city employees until a new City Hall and Public Safety Building opened in 2015. From 2015 to 2022 it was used mainly for recreation and storage, and it was torn down in spring 2023.
The new building cost about $21 million and covers 44,000 square feet, according to the Press of Atlantic City. On the main level are a gym with an NBA-size court striped for three pickleball courts and one volleyball court, a Community Meeting Room with a stage and kitchen, a fitness classroom, an arts and crafts room and a Quiet Room. Upstairs are an elevated walking and running track, a golf simulator room and a multi-ball game room. Parking is free in the outdoor lot on the Central Avenue side and in the garage under the building. Neither is open overnight.
The Hours Favor Weekdays
Monday through Thursday the building is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday runs to 9 p.m. Saturday closes at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Friday has the latest hours in the week, and Sunday has the shortest. If you arrive Friday and leave Sunday, the building is open longest on the evening you get in and shortest on the day you leave.
The calendar follows the same pattern. Several of October's most distinctive programs fall on weekdays:
- Coffee with Cops, Thursday, October 15, 10 to 11:30 a.m., hosted by the Sea Isle City Police Department and First Bank of Sea Isle City, with tips on spotting scams and protecting your savings
- Book Club, Thursday, October 15, 4 to 5 p.m., ages 18 and up, registration required. The city's October 1 newsletter reported a waitlist.
- History of Movies, Wednesdays from noon to 3 p.m., a film and discussion with free popcorn, free for members and $5 for nonmembers
- Craft Club for grades 4 through 8, Tuesdays 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., materials provided, registration required
- Recreation Committee meeting, Tuesday, October 6, at 5 p.m. The next one listed is January 5, 2027.
Most of the fitness classes are weekday too. Total Body Fitness runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at $5 a class or $40 a month. Chair Yoga meets Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings at the same prices. Sit/Fit, a free class for seniors, is listed for Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Year-round residents can use most of this. A weekend owner mainly gets the Friday morning sessions.
What a Friday-to-Sunday Stay Can Use
October's weekend offerings are narrower, but there are enough of them to fill a stay:
| When | What | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. | Indoor pickleball, intermediate then advanced | Free for members and tag holders |
| Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon | Craft & Connect, a self-led adult art club, ages 18+ | Free, registration required |
| Fridays, Oct. 9 and Oct. 23, 6 to 8 p.m. | Freaky Friday Movie Nights | Free popcorn and drinks |
| Saturdays, 7 to 9 a.m. | Men's pickup basketball, high school age and older | General use |
| Saturday, Oct. 17, 2 to 3:15 p.m. | Murder Mystery Show: Franken-Murder!, Community Room | $5, limited seating |
| Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. | Indoor pickleball, advanced then intermediate | Free for members and tag holders |
| Saturday, Oct. 31, from 5 p.m. | Trunk or Treat in the Community Center parking lot | Free |
Indoor pickleball season started October 1 and runs through March 31. Wednesday and Thursday each have more court time than any weekend day, and Thursday is the only day with a beginner session, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Members and pickleball season-tag holders play free. Everyone else pays $5 a session. The posted schedule is subject to change.
Trunk or Treat is the event most clearly tied to the building this fall. The 2026 listing calls the Community Center lot a new location. Cars have to be parked by 4:30 p.m. and stay put until 7 p.m. Vehicle sign-ups are due October 30 by phone at 609-263-0050, and the best-decorated car wins a prize. City-wide trick-or-treating at registered homes and businesses runs the same evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
Golf Simulator Pricing Works Against the Weekend
The golf simulator is the one amenity where a weekend stay costs more. It's $55 an hour per group off-peak and $75 an hour at peak, with up to four people per group. Peak covers weekdays from 5 p.m. to close and all day Saturday and Sunday. A Friday morning tee time costs $20 less per hour than the same hour on Saturday. On the October calendar, the room is also used for the First Tee Fall Program from 5 to 7 p.m.
The multi-ball game room counts as free general use, but adults need a Community Center membership card. If you haven't picked up your card since the building opened, call the Recreation Office at 609-263-0050 before your next trip. Guests who don't own property here pay general-use fees of $5 a day, $40 a month or $120 a year. The city says summer and seasonal renters fall in that group. Children up to 17 use the building free.
October 16 and 17 Fill the Building and the Streets
The weekend of October 16 is the busiest stretch of the month. On Friday, the Halloween Parade & Dance Party runs from 7 to 9 p.m., starting at 45th Street and Landis Avenue and ending at Excursion Park. On Saturday, the Harvest Classic takes over Excursion Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with pumpkin decorating, beach hayrides, live music, business pop-ups, a scarecrow contest and a pie-baking contest. Franken-Murder! starts at 2 p.m. that Saturday in the Community Room, so you can catch the end of the festival and still make the show.
The previous Saturday, October 10, the Environmental Commission's Autumn Beach Clean-Up and dune-grass planting meets at JFK Boulevard and the Promenade from 10 a.m. to noon. With the Friday movie night on October 9, that gives a weekend owner a second full weekend this month.
Getting to 45th and Central This Month
Expect construction on the way. In his October 1 message, Mayor Desiderio said a contractor is building curbs and sidewalks ahead of repaving Central Avenue from JFK Boulevard to 56th Street, and he asked drivers to watch for detours. The Community Center's block falls inside that stretch. Repaving of Pleasure Avenue from 79th to 85th Street was set to start the following week. On the Promenade, work on structural improvements and accessible ramps had reached 29th through 32nd Streets.
Street sweeping runs October 6 through at least November 5. The schedule is Tuesdays for 2nd through 44th Streets, Wednesdays for 45th through 70th and Thursdays for 71st through 94th, and the city asks people to move cars off the street when they can. The building's own lot and garage take care of parking for a visit. Weekend owners won't be in town for most sweeping days anyway.
On the beach, the city's September 17 update said 2026 replenishment is finished. About 480,000 cubic yards of sand went down between 29th and 55th Streets. The city's beach replenishment page says all beach accesses are open. After the recent nor'easter, the mayor reported that the full dune system is intact. The Community Center is closed on Thanksgiving. It's open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. the day after, the same day Winter Village opens at Excursion Park.
